What is Bluetooth?

You'll see many Bluetooth products on our website But do you really understand what Bluetooth is?

Bluetooth is the name given to an international open standard for short range wireless data transmission. Because Bluetooth is an internationally accepted standard, any product which is stated as Bluetooth compatible should be able to communicate (transfer data) with any other Bluetooth device.

The most common application for Bluetooth so far is in mobile phone headsets for cellphone hands-free operation or for in-car phone systems (car kits).

Using Wireless Bluetooth With Your Mobile Phone

  • Use a headset / earpiece to speak on your mobile. The handset is in your pocket or bag, and needs no cables to connect to the microphone/ speakers. Many people find the audio quality of hands-free kits to be much better, and it also alleviates any health concerns about microwave transmissions from the cellphone.
  • Use your mobile phone in your car without holding the handset. Safer and cooler.

Other Bluetooth Applications

  • Wireless networking between PCs. Many laptops have built-in Bluetooth receivers, and for PCs you can get Bluetooth adapters e.g. USB Bluetooth dongles.
  • Wireless PC peripherals. E.g. printer, mouse, keyboard communicating with PC by Bluetooth signal.
  • Wireless TV headphones.
  • Console controllers (e.g. PS3) are turning to Bluetooth wireless technology.
  • Data transfer between PC, Mobile phone, and PDA.
  • Remote controls (replacing infra red).
  • Museum-style / tour guide information audio headsets.

Technical Information About Bluetooth Data Transmission:

Bluetooth provides up to 720 Kbps data transfer within a range of 10 meters, and up to 100 meters with a power boost. Unlike infra red, which requires a clear line of sight, Bluetooth uses radio waves that can transmit through walls and other non-metal barriers. Bluetooth transmits in the 2.4GHz band and uses a frequency hopping technique that changes its signal 1600 times per second. If there is interference from other devices, the transmission does not stop.

Bluetooth products are available in one of three power classes:

Class Power
(mW)
Power
(dBm)
Range
(approximate)
Class 1 100 mW 20 dBm ~100 meters
Class 2 2.5 mW 4 dBm ~10 meters
Class 3 1 mW 0 dBm ~10cm (1 meter max)

Did You Know?

The Bluetooth standard was developed by the Scandinavian company Ericsson. They named the standard Bluetooth after a famous 10th-Century Danish King King Harald Bluetooth.
